Hostel

6th January 2006

Eli Roth’s torture horror film grossed $80 million worldwide on a $5 million budget, portraying how successful the film was. Upon its release, it terrified audiences for its imaginative graphics, gore and the realism it showcased.

This first instalment in the Hostel trilogy follows two college students travelling across Europe who find themselves preyed upon by a disturbed group who kidnap and torture their victims.

Cloverfield

18th January 2008

Upon its release, Cloverfield became one of the most-hyped January releases of all time due to its ground-breaking marketing. Produced by J.J Abrams (known for the recent Star Wars films), the film grossed $40 million in its opening weekend and $170 million worldwide.

Cloverfield helped reinvigorate the found footage genre, as a camcorder is used to follow six New Yorkers fleeing from a giant unknown monster which has attacked the city.

Tremors

19th January 1990

If a horror film about massive killer worms was released today, it may not get the recognition Tremors received when released in 1990. Kevin Bacon stars in the first of this franchise, and although not a box office success, earning just $16 million, it became a hit when released on video.

This beloved horror-comedy was the perfect combination to produce the classic we know today, and there will be a sixth film from the franchise, Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell, set for release in May this year.

From Dusk Till Dawn

19th January 1996

Did you know, the script for this film was Quentin Tarantino’s first paid writing assignment? Known by many as Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino’s greatest collaboration, it enters the conversation of one of the best ever January releases.

With stars including George Clooney, Salma Hayek, Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis, it evolved into becoming a cult classic to many. A film which features robbery, kidnap and vampires were enough to entice viewers. However, the film was not a huge box office success, garnering $26 million on a $19 million budget.

If you grew up in the nineties, you will certainly have seen or heard of this hugely successful teen romantic comedy. Upon release, it hit the number one spot at the box office in its first week, garnering $103 million overall.
