TV and Film in 2021

2021 has been a year filled with ups and downs for most people. With the pandemic taking the world by storm, we found ourselves in a national lockdown, confined to our homes. Yet, during this time, many of us turned to our TVs as a source of entertainment and an escape from reality.

From the top streaming services of the year to the TV shows we binged-watched the most, 2021 has been an unforgettable year for TV and film. Although the pandemic disrupted the filming of new TV shows and movies, this year still saw some of the greatest releases. As experts in cheap TVs, in this blog, we’re taking a look back at some of the television and film highlights from 2021.

Streaming Services of 2021

One of the best streaming services of 2021 was the hugely popular and ever-growing Netflix. With new releases such as Squid Game, Red Notice, and You, Netflix has continued to deliver original content that keeps audiences engaged. Not only does Netflix continue to create new and exclusive content, but it also houses old TV favourites such as Friends and The Office and classic film favourites such as The Notebook. The diverse range of TV and film offered by Netflix is one of the main reasons it remains so popular.

However, there was much more competition for the top streaming service this year, with contenders including Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and HBO Max in the running. With each streaming service offering a slightly different range of TV and film, the competition was close. HBO Max remains one to watch with original releases this year, such as the Friends reunion and the recent reboot of Sex and the City.

This year also saw the release of new streaming services such as Discovery+. This service focuses on reality TV, offering shows from various channels including TLC, Food Network, Animal Planet and The Discovery Channel. With more and more streaming services hitting our screen each year, we can continue to watch plenty of fresh content at any time, especially as streaming services are now integrated into TV models such as cheap LED TVs.

Most Popular TV Shows of 2021

2021 gave us a selection of great TV shows from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki.  Additionally, taking one of the top spots was the Netflix original Squid Game. This show hit our screens in September 2021 and immediately took the world by storm. It quickly became Netflix’s most successful TV show and gripped the nation for nine episodes.

Another of the most popular TV shows in 2021 was Wandavsion, available to stream on Disney+. After its initial release, Wandavision scored a series high with 589 million views across five half-hour episodes. As Disney+ is a relatively new streaming site, this TV show was a huge hit and suggested that Disney+ could be massive competition for rival Netflix over the coming years.

New Movies To Watch Out For

Streaming sites constantly add the newest movies to stay current and keep their audiences engaged with exclusive content. Netflix has most recently released Tick, Tick… Boom!, a film based on the life of playwright Jonathan Larson, portrayed by Andrew Garfield. The film was released less than a month ago (at the time of publication) and has already received stellar reviews across the board. With more great reviews flocking in, this is one you don’t want to miss this year.

Disney+ also has some new movies to keep an eye out for over the coming months. In January 2022, the latest Marvel addition, The Eternals, starring Angelina Jolie, will be available to watch via the streaming site. In addition, the highly anticipated ‘Encanto’, a family film telling the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, will also be released on Disney+ this Christmas Eve.

With new releases every week, streaming sites continue to provide fresh material to keep us entertained throughout the year. Our cheap 4K TVs are ideal for keeping up with the latest movies from streaming sites as they have built-in apps for Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and more.

Award-Winning TV Shows and Movies and How to Watch

This year also saw the release of award-winning TV shows and movies available to watch at the touch of a button. At the 2021 Emmys, it was new TV shows Ted Lasso that scooped up most of the prizes, walking away with 7 Emmy awards. The awards included the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. The series follows Ted Lasso, an American college football coach hired to coach an English soccer team and is available to watch using the streaming service Apple TV.

It was also a successful year for movies, with the title Nomadland receiving the Oscar award for Best Picture. This US drama stars Frances McDormand, who also won the Oscar for Best Actress for her work on this film. Nomadland not only won the Oscar, but it also received an influx of star-studded reviews, so it is one you don’t want to miss. This picture is available to stream using Disney+.
